Don't miss this opportunity to study with an artist that has won three awards from the Portrait Society of America.
 The workshop will be held at the

Cost: $225
Description: This is your opportunity to dust off those reference photos you have wanted to use to create that special portrait and actually get started or finish it.  Knowledge in the use of pastel or oil will be assumed. 
This class will focus on the essential skills necessary to paint convincing, colorful portraits in these mediums.  We will spend the first morning understanding classical measurements of the head and body and common mistakes made in their construction.  That afternoon we will review each participant’s reference photos, discuss composition strategies and best practices for approaching the creation of any great piece of art.  The remainder of the workshop will be spent in one-on-one guidance with each participant to finish the portrait of your choice.  Emphasis will be placed on producing an accurate likeness with beautiful skin color in whatever palette you bring.

 Note:  Final payment of $100 will be due at the first class on June 27th.
Supply list: 
·        Pastels or Oils (please no Winton or other student grade oil products)
·        Brushes, towels, canvas, razors, etc…needed for the medium you will use
·        Reference photos: Photos should NOT be taken with the flash on or in bright midday sun.  You should be able to see good color in the skin tones and have some of the face in soft shadow.  Bring a variety of poses, if possible.

·        Easels and tables are provided by the studio.

Attention Artists: Upcoming Workshop Opportunity with Judith Carducci!



The Woodlands Art League is excited to offer this extraordinary artist for a week of professional art instruction. Dates: Monday June 24 -- Friday June 28, 2013 This workshop will be open to all levels of Pastel Artists and Oil Artists. We will have 3 days of Portraiture instruction with live models and 2 days of Plein Air instruction.


We are offering three options as listed below:

Option 1: Full five days of instruction
$600.00 (Includes model fees)

Option 2: Three days of portraiture instruction
$400.00 (Includes model fees)

Option 3: Two days of plein air instruction
$200.00

Listed in Who's Who in American Art, Judith Carducci has received international recognition as one of today's best portrait painters. Her work has been shown in such venues as The National Arts Club and the Salmagundi Club in New York City, the Cahoon Museum of American Art, and the Butler Institute of American Art. She has been featured in International Artist, Pastel Artist International, American Artist, The Pastel Journal, The Artist's Magazine, and the books, Best of Portrait Painting and Best of Pastel (North Light Books), "100 Ways to Paint People" (International Artist), and Portrait Highlights (American Artist). She is one of two Americans featured in the book Paint! Portrait and Figure by the Swiss publisher RotoVision, and her painting, "Xanadu," was selected as one of the "best of the best" by the former curator of the Smithsonian Institute's Renwick Gallery for the art book Beautiful Things (Guild). Her work is in collections in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Israel, Europe and South Africa. Her paintings have won Best of Show, Award of Excellence, First Place, Award of Merit, and purchase awards at international and national shows and competitions. She is a member of the Portrait Society of America (board & faculty), Pastel Society of America (signature member), Degas Pastel Society, American Artists Professional League, International Association of Pastel Societies, Cincinnati Art Club, Salmagundi Club, Akron Society of Artists and Hudson Society of Artists. She is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS
 This workshop will focus on understanding what one sees
and then how to translate that into paint.

Areas covered will include understanding form and edges through the study of values and color temperature, the difference between representing form and light, tuning your palette and mixing color as it relates to the light source.


Each study has  a different
purpose and goal
in order to gain a sense of control over the handling of the
subject and materials.


These exercises are designed to foster artistic growth and mastery over one’s materials and techniques to gain greater avenues of pictorial expression.

Clayton J. Beck III graduated from the American Academy
of Art in Chicago.
During the 1980's,
he taught & studied
at the Palette &Chisel
with Richard Schmid.
He has received awards of excellence and distinction from the Portrait Society of America, the Midwest Pastel Society,
the Pastel Society of America, the Municipal Art League of Chicago, the Palette & Chisel and the
Oil Painters of America.
Clayton has been invited to speak and/or demonstrate at the Prix de West Annual Show, the American  Impressionist Society, the Portrait Society of America.
