PSoA TX Chapter: “En Plein Air Painting in the Big Bend”, Labor Day Weekend, 2019!

 “En Plein Air Painting in the Big Bend”, on Labor Day Weekend, 2019 is presented by the Big Bend Arts Council in association with the West Texas Chapter the Portrait Society of America and the City of Alpine.

Enjoy a weekend of Plein Air painting, a Museum “Meet and Greet”, Sidewalk  Art exhibit and sale, and Plein Air art Exhibit August 30^ththrough September 2^nd,-Labor Day Weekend!

The event kicks off on Friday evening with a “meet and greet” at Museum of the Big Bend on Sul Ross State University campus. Artists will come to Alpine and paint “in the open air” at various locations in the Big Bend region.  Paint-outs are planned at the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute, and the towns Fort Davis and Alpine.  Additional fun locations include Wasserman Wranch, or the Fort in Fort Davis.

There will be a Sidewalk Art exhibit and sale on Sunday with an Artists’ Reception for the Plein Air exhibit at the Big Bend Art Council’s “Gallery on the Square” in Alpine on Sunday evening, (work may be unframed or framed). Optional Monday events in Marathon, Terlingua, and the Rio Grande River road are also planned.

All plein air painters and people who are interested in watching the process are invited.

This introductory egg tempera workshop is designed for artists who would like to venture out into the world of egg tempera and understand this medium employed by old masters.   

Students will have the opportunity to learn from two of the most respected, internationally award-winning painters known for their figurative works in both egg tempera and oil: Julio Reyes and Candice Bohannon.  Enthused to be able to offer this first egg tempera workshop, both Julio and Candice will be providing demonstrations each day, as well as individual instruction and critiques while sharing their knowledge of egg tempera and painting techniques.  They will teach you how to mix egg tempera paint from scratch, guide you    through their method of creating egg tempera portrait paintings and lay the foundation for creating visually strong paintings. Additionally, all egg tempera supplies, canvases and   brushes will be provided in this workshop.  

Working from photographs provided by Julio and Candice, students will learn:

• how to prepare an ideal modern surface from aluminum composite panel
• transfer a drawing and create an ink wash underpainting
• build color and light through multiple layers
• achieve realistic flesh tones and soft transitions
• deal with edges and make corrections
• learn how to expand the value range, and
• techniques for finishing.

JULIO REYES earned a BFA in Painting and Drawing with a minor in Sculpture from Laguna College of Art and Design.   After graduation, he married his art school sweetheart and dove headfirst into a life of art making. Through skillful craft and exquisite handling, Julio shares his unique and passionate vision in painting, drawing and sculpture.  His work often depicts intimate dramas; brief moments of unnoticed grandeur, and tender souls grappling with the pressures of modern life.  Winning top awards, "Best in Show" 2010-ARC Annual Salon Competition – The Art Renewal Center’s and the 2012 prestigious William F. Draper Grand Prize at the International Portrait Society of America, Julio is one of only two artists winning the highest honor at both major American art Competitions. Represented by Arcadia Gallery, New York/LosAngeles, in 2011, Julio had his debut solo exhibition in New York. Throughout his career, Julio has been featured in dozens of books and magazines, exhibited in multiple countries and museums, is collected all over the world.  Recently relocated to Fort Worth, Texas with artist and wife Candice Bohannon, they welcomed their first child. 

CANDICE BOHANNON received her BFA with honors from Laguna College of Art and Design (2005). Bohannon’s artwork consists of deeply compassionate, penetrating and emotive figurative pieces along with intensely studied works from life and nature.  Her work is contemplative, expressing a sincere philosophical pursuit of truth and meaning, and an exploration of the robust human spirit.  Exhibiting in some of the finest museum shows, Candice's work has received numerous honors:  2nd place in the Art Renewal Center (ARC) figurative category in 2016, Fine Art Connoisseur’s Award of Excellence in ARC's 2013 competition and 1st Place in The Artist’s Magazine Annual Art Competition in 2012. Additionally, she received a Certificate of Excellence from the Portrait Society of America in 2012.  Candice work has been published in numerous art books and major publications such as Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, The Artist’s Magazine, International Artist, Professional Artist Magazine, and ArtSee. Candice is currently represented by The Principle Gallery, Alexandria, VA. She currently resides in Texas, and shares her life with husband and fellow artist, Julio Reyes.

The Art of the Portrait Tri-State Exhibition

Exciting news and a wonderful opportunity!!!

Kathryn Richardson, one of the Oklahoma State Ambassadors, made a connection at the Oklahoma Hall of Fame which after much communication and planning, we will be hosting our Fall Portrait Academy at the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in the Gaylord-Pickens Museum in Oklahoma City, OK on October 4-5, 2019.

Faculty Rose Frantzen and Jeff Hein will present a portrait painting demonstration on Friday night and teach drawing workshops all day on Saturday. Portrait Academy attendees will select to participate in either Rose’s or Jeff’s drawing workshop, like the drawing workshops at the conference. The cost for the Portrait Academy is $189 for both days, or $35 for Friday’s demonstration only.

In conjunction with the Portrait Academy, we will be hosting “The Art of the Portrait Tri-State Exhibition,” also at the Gaylord-Pickens Museum. This juried exhibition is open only to artists living in the states of Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, and they do not have to be a member of the Portrait Society of America to enter. For a fee of $25, artists can submit up to three works through the online entry form to be juried into the exhibition. More details are available in the attached Prospectus.

·  August 19, 2019- Notification of acceptance into exhibition

·  September 6, 2019, 9:00am-5:00pm- Artwork drop off

Renaissance Masters’ Oil Painting Workshop: Verdaccio Underpainting & Glazing

D.K. Richardson will be teaching a Renaissance Masters’ Oil Painting Workshop: Verdaccio Underpainting & Glazing.  Five and a half days at Degallery in College Station, Texas, November 11-16, 2018. Students of all levels accepted - no experience required. We will cover use of a grid, contour drawing, mixing a value range in green for the underpainting, mixing glazes for the final layers, controlling paint application, and adding beautiful detail.

This comprehensive five day workshop is designed to share tips and techniques learned from over twenty-five years of working in the acrylic medium. Chantel’s gentle teaching style will enrich the painting skills of beginners and advanced artists alike as she demonstrates painting the portrait from reference photos, without losing the energy and vitality of working from life.

Chantel will also demonstrate painting the portrait from a model and share valuable insight into the differences between working from life versus photos. 

Students will learn: essential acrylic materials and how to use them, what photographs make the best references for portrait painting, editing (what you leave out is just as important as what you keep in), color mixing tips, and techniques for working from a model. Students will also learn the importance of edges when working in acrylic. Students are encouraged to bring their own photographs for the reference photo portion of the workshop (Chantel will have some on hand if needed). Oil painters are welcome and can benefit from techniques taught.

Chantel’s passion for art began flourishing at age 12 when she was mentored under local San Diego artists. She continued to study art, largely self-taught, while living in Newport, Rhode Island and Keflavik, Iceland. While enrolled in a college art course, a fellow student introduced her to acrylic paints, and she soon found it to be a medium dominated by abstract art. But her first love was portraiture for which she found little advice. As she dreamed of perfecting her skills as an acrylic portrait artist, Chantel continued to learn from professional oil painters and translated their teachings into acrylic techniques. All the while, she remained active in local art communities, including serving as President of Artists’ Link in Memphis, Tennessee.

In 2006, Chantel opened her own art business called Chantel's Originals near Memphis Tennessee. Chantel soon benefited from workshops and demonstrations with outstanding artists including Dawn Whitelaw, Michael Shane Neil, Suzie Baker, and Marc Hanson. Chantel is currently the National Coordinator of the State Ambassador program for the Portrait Society of America, and is also a member of The Chestnut Group, and the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society.

Chantel has been featured in solo art shows and juried exhibitions. Her award winning paintings are in private and public collections throughout the United States and overseas. Her work is published in Acrylic Artist magazine, American 

Art Collector, Southwest Art, The Artist’s Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, International Artist and several books. She regularly blogs at chantellynnbarber.com. Chantel resides in Bartlett, Tennessee where she teaches online and in workshops throughout the United States and Canada.

It is with great pleasure that I announce the award winners of our very first Texas Members Exhibition. Each photo includes comments by our wonderful judge, Tina Garrett.

It was a real privilege to be invited to judge the First Texas Portrait Society Member’s Exposition. This is the first PSoA show I’ve been invited to judge and I fully understand and respect all the judges who have had to chose winners in the shows I’ve been in. There are many factors that helped me decide which paintings to select as winners and a couple works that I wish I could have fitted into this list of top 5 out of 75. Overall I looked for an understanding of the medium, hints that works were composed and not only replications of photos, accurate drawing and value understanding and interesting color and brushwork. I appreciate everyone’s work and their bravery in entering a juried show and I hope all the artists will keep working on their own paths to mastery. The world needs more artists and can never have enough great art! -Tina Garrett

Honorable Mention: Juan Cantavella, Looking Forward

There were some lovely works to chose from and the subtle color and attention to detail and accurate drawing gave this one the edge. 

3rd Place: Lenore Prudhomme, Acacia

This is a beautiful study. The fresh brushwork and splashes of color were delightful to look at up close in this piece. I kept zooming in to see the magic.

2nd Place: Tanja Gant, Sienna 

There is a beautiful peacefulness achieved in this tender drawing. I appreciate the simple composition and the illusion of gentle form and I love the execution of the reflected light on her jaw. I would love to see this artist's most recent works. 

1st Place: Jing Zhao, Check My Phone First

There is a lot that can be said with a suggestion and for me, that always wins over a rendering. So many artists torture the brushwork to death leaving a static and uninteresting surface. I loved the simple yet confident brushwork and the concentrated chroma in this lovely work. All of this supports her posture and the mood. It is excellent. 

Best of Show: Nancy Boren, Queen of the Mirabella

There is so much to entertain in this work with its fabulous color and mark making. I held this one aside from the start and compared all others to it. It is a high bar and I hope all the artists who attend will take a moment to look closely at it in person and enjoy the power of its simplicity, flavor, and energy. Well done!
